All my work deals with nature, culture, and the journey of human
life. As a writer, I use creative nonfiction to explore transforming
encounters with landscapes and people. My first book focused
on wilderness and initiation, but my current work deals with urban
nature. We can learn so much about living wisely on the earth
from paying attention to our own home places.
As a scholar, I study American nature writers and apply outdoor
experience to research, interpretation, and teaching. I write
for scholarly journals and edited volumes; I also review manuscripts
for journals and university presses.
My work supports an active practice of reading and speaking at professional
meetings, churches, schools, environmental groups, and college
campuses across the country. I give keynote addresses, conduct
field trips, visit classes, and conduct faculty workshops.
